Ranthambore Museum

The Ranthambore Museum, known as the Rajiv Gandhi Regional Museum of Natural History, was inaugurated on 1st March 2014. It is located in Ramsinghpura, Sawai Madhopur. The museum is an added feather in the already historically rich cap of Rajasthan. The museum is open daily, except on National Holidays and Mondays. It is open from ten am to five pm. This museum is the fourth museum of natural history in India after Mysore, Bhubaneswar and Bhopal.

Ramsinghpura is located 9 kilometers away from Sawai Madhopur. The foundation of the museum was laid by Hamid Ansari, the honourable Vice President of India, in December of the year 2007. In the following years, the museum has emerged as a centre for public awareness of conservation of natural resources in nature and for environmental education.

Spread over 7.2 acres, the museum is designed tastefully and its aim is to create awareness on various forms of life. It consists of three floors and contains exhibits which show the diverse fauna, flora, geology and mineral wealth of the western region of India. The ground floor contains exhibits on the Ranthambore fort and the wildlife there. The major attractions include effigies of Deer, Black Buck, Leopard and Tiger. Other attractions include a beautiful portrait of Ranthambore Fort and a live scene depicting village life. Other than these, the museum also has an art gallery and a stall selling pottery. As a visitor, you can see how pottery is made at the stall. You can also witness live painting. These paintings and pottery items are all available for sale.

Other than being a centre for exhibits, the museum also provides extracurricular and educational activities for schools. These efforts generally concentrate on the relationship between animals and plants. What’s more? The museum also has a library which contains 10,000 books on nature and wildlife. As a visitor, you can pick any of the books for reading. There are no costs for videography and photography inside the museum premises. Two naturalists have been appointed by the museum to assist all visitors.

The museum also contains an auditorium which can seat about 300 people. It has been mainly constructed for wildlife documentaries and seminars.
